Salvatore Caputo was born in Castell’Umberto (Messina) in 1947. From the childhood, he demonstrates a remarkable interest for painting: in 1964 he opens his first personal exhibition. He starts on studying architecture, however he doesn’t give up painting; on the contrary, he’s interested in graphic techniques. After his doctorate, Caputo intensifies his artistic activity devoting himself to sculpture and collage too, developing a more and more original language. From 1976 to 1979, the Author works between Rome and Palermo. In this period he exhibits in Palermo, Rome, Florence, Syracuse and l’Aquila. In the beginning of the 80’s, the crumbled figures and the ectoplasms characterising his previous production are replaced with the Mediterranean Sea and his sun. During this decade he participates to various qualified art-shows in Italy and abroad. In this period, Caputo matures his poetic, and makes the mythological dimension of memory resurface. The contents join in new forms, the objects of art, that are point of meeting between painting and sculpture, are more and more present in the Caputo’s production. In addition to his main interest, the engraving, he uses the serigraphic and lithographic technique and also works to an important production of medals. Actually the Author is going through the mythical dimension of existence and he shows a renewed interest towards sacred themes. Concerning this one, we can remind, amongst others, the personal exhibition in Palermo cathedral in 1994 and 1996. It was the first time when one could look over a personal exhibition of a contemporary artist.
